What's the secret to glossy tresses? No doubt good genes play a part, but how you care for your hair is key, too. Board-certified dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, recommends these top tips to keep your mane silky smooth and shiny.
1
Wash oily hair more frequently
How often you wash your hair should be based on how much oil your scalp produces. If you have oily scalp, you may need to wash it as often as once a day, she says. Those with drier or chemically treated hair may want to wash it less frequently. But if you see flakes in your hair, it may be a sign that you're not shampooing enough, and this can lead to dandruff and other scalp problems.
2
Shampoo right
"When shampooing, concentrate on cleaning primarily the scalp, rather than the entire length of the hair, as washing only your hair can create flyaway hair that is full and coarse," explains Draelos.
3
Use conditioner after every shampoo
Unless you're using a "2-in-1" shampoo, a conditioner is a must. It helps increase shine, improve strength and protect your strands from UV damage -- all these will significantly improve the look of damaged hair. "Conditioners should only be used on the tips of the hair and not on the scalp or length of the hair since conditioners can make fine hair look limp," she adds.
4
Choose products catered for your hair type
For instance, if you color your hair, use a shampoo formulated specifically for color-treated hair. If you have frizzy ends, look for a richer shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair.
5
Protect your tresses from chlorine
Chlorine in the pool can have damaging effects on the hair. To protect your mane, wet and condition hair prior to swimming. Wear a tight-fitting swim cap and use a specially formulated swimmers shampoo and deep conditioner after swimming to replace lost moisture, says Draelos.
