Makeup past their prime are a breeding ground for germs. Go through your products one by one and toss out those that are past their expiration date. "Ditch mascara after three months, eye pencils and foundation after a year," recommends David E. Bank, author of Beautiful Skin.
No expiry date on the tube? Inspect your makeup and discard anything that looks or smells off. As a guide, here are the average shelf life of various makeup:
- Concealer: 1 year
- Powder: 2 years
- Powder shadow or blush: 2 years
- Cream shadow or blush: 2 years
- Lipstick: 2 years
- Eyeliner: 1 year
- Makeup brushes: Up to 10 years
